Kenya Karinga
Our next coffee under the Limited Release Series banner comes to us from the Karinga Factory in Kiambu. Located just north of the capital city of Nairobi, this area is home to many of the world's most famous coffees. Kenyan coffee is sought after due to the unique presence of vivid fruit notes like currant and passionfruit. This is in part due to the widespread farming of SL varieties bred by the National Agricultural Laboratories (formerly Scott Laboratories during British colonialism) in the 1930s.
This coffee is the most fruit forward of our offerings. Whereas the Ethiopia Ardi and Uganda Rwenzori, have fruit forward profiles, this coffee from Kenya takes it a step higher. If we are to compare this with our previous limited release from Rwanda, Both the intensity and fruitiness are amped up considerably. Pair this level of brightness with a sticky candied sweetness and we get an intense balanced cup profile.
The Karinga Factory is operated by the Gitwe Farmers Cooperative Society. Founded in 1983, the society now receives coffee cherry from about 650 members who each have on average 1 hectare of land. The society has a field committee that assists members with services including distribution of seedlings, guidance about fertilizer, and conducts quality assurance.
