Finca Terrerito: Paving the Way for Ripples of Good

A great cup of coffee can reach far beyond the cup. It can support skilled work, healthier land, stronger schools, and clean water. Through our Ripples of Good program, we connect with people who believe that the value coffee creates should help the communities behind it thrive.

Finca Terrerito is one of those partners. Here’s how their work in Honduras brings our shared mission to life.

What is Ripples of Good?

Ripples of Good connects Whirlwind with like-minded businesses and organizations, from seed to cup and beyond. It’s an extension of our commitment to doing good at every step.

The coffees we source for this program connect people throughout our upstream value chain who share a giving-back mindset. From farming and milling to exporting and importing, these partners prioritize good governance, fair payment, and returning some of the value they create to their communities.

Meet Finca Terrerito

Finca Terrerito (or Finca T) is a fifth-generation, vertically integrated coffee business. That means they oversee coffee as it makes its way from the seed, to harvest, to processing, and onwards through the export and import process. Their mission statement “Improve Lives, Sustainable Practices, Extraordinary Coffee” captures their goal to do more.

Nestled beneath the majestic Monte Tenán, all of the coffee they grow and process is USDA organic, Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade America, and Bird Friendly certified. What was once pastureland is now a refuge for coffee trees, native flora, and wildlife.

Their commitment extends to the people who make each harvest possible. The farm provides dormitories for 50 pickers, bathrooms, kitchens with potable water, and electricity. Beyond producing high-quality coffee, Finca T stands as a model of environmental regeneration and female empowerment, as their sister farm, Finca La Unica, is led by Leticia Lopez, who challenges traditional roles in Honduran agriculture.

How Finca T creates ripples of good

Major issues face the coffee supply chain regarding climate change, labor, and equal access to market information. Finca T leads as an example in using sustainable farming, paying and treating their seasonal coffee cherry pickers fairly, and by being a source of knowledge for their staff and community so that everyone can have a chance to grow their skill sets.

Respecting skilled work

Specialty coffee depends on skilled, deliberate hand-picking. Coffee cherries need to be harvested at peak ripeness, and the people doing that work are essential to quality in the cup.

Seasonal picking work can come with low pay and inadequate housing. Finca T addresses those challenges by paying above local minimum wages and providing housing with electricity, running water, and clean facilities. Treating workers with respect helps build the skilled team that great coffee requires.

Caring for the land

Finca T routinely checks soil health, studying its texture, structure, and composition to better understand the growing environment and guide improvements. They also control weeds manually, helping protect the soil while investing in the local workforce.

Collecting rainwater in on-site tanks gives the farm more control over irrigation and reduces its reliance on local water supplies. Coffee parchment, a byproduct of processing, fuels their mechanical dryers. Those dryers help deliver consistent results in wet weather while putting a material already produced on the farm back to work.

Sharing knowledge and opportunity

Finca T being a vertically integrated coffee business means they don't just farm the coffee. They

also act as a local buyer of fresh coffee cherries from neighboring farms. Along with those purchases, they  share feedback with neighboring farms on how to improve.

Giving back this information creates opportunities for everyone to benefit. More high quality coffee means better access to specialty coffee markets, higher farmgate prices, and opportunity to invest in the future.

These core business practices ensure Finca T can keep producing high quality coffee over the long term and continue their giving back projects.

Building opportunities through education

In February 2022, Finca T opened Escuela Rural Mixta Terrerito Matiak Foundation. Prior to its construction, kids in the area had to walk over an hour each way to get to the closest school. This commute was not only long but could be dangerous, and acted as a significant deterrent to education for kids in the community. Faced with this problem, Finca T partnered with the Matiak Foundation to envision a different reality.

The school is now about a 15-minute walk from the neighboring village of El Caltatato. Its accredited bilingual program offers education in English and Spanish, with agriculture woven into the curriculum. When children begin school, they plant an orange tree. As they progress through the grades, the tree grows alongside them. A science lesson might explore how climate change affects the tree’s health. A math lesson might consider how much fruit a tree needs to produce to earn income for the next year. Learning connects directly to the land and the community around them.

The children are not only receiving an education, but are also given a free, nutritionally balanced meal every day. Each child receives their own backpack along with school supplies for the entire school year. An attached clinic offers a place to seek medical help. Together, these resources create a safe, supportive environment where children can learn and grow. The kids are better prepared for the future and the community that surrounds Finca T is as well.

The school’s next goal is to expand through eighth grade, allowing students to keep learning close to home. Plans also include technical classes in carpentry and engineering, helping young people build skills they can use to contribute to their community’s future. Bringing clean water closer to home

In Honduras, roughly 34.5% of the population lacks clean drinking water, compared to about

2.5% in the U.S. For years, the village neighboring Finca Terrerito faced a difficult choice: collect water from a creek or travel three kilometers to the nearest town to buy bottled water. Until 2024, around 60 families relied on these options, until a partnership between Finca T and the Matiak Foundation built a well that provides clean drinking water to the community—a well Finca T continues to maintain today.

In 2026, additional infrastructure brought running potable water into some homes in El Caltatato. Bringing water closer to home reduces the distance people need to travel and frees up valuable time each day. It’s another way Finca T puts its commitment to improving lives into practice.
