Sumatra Mandheling
A Whirlwind classic returns! While Indonesian coffees such as Java and Bali are a mainstay on our coffee menu, Sumatra occupies a special place in our lineup and in the history of specialty coffee itself.
This coffee comes from Mount Leuser in the Batak region of West‑Central Sumatra, part of one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Exporters and traders often labeled coffee under the Mandheling name because that’s who they were working with locally, and over time, “Mandheling” became a term for high‑quality Sumatran arabica coffee.
This coffee carries the hallmarks that made it a cornerstone of early specialty coffee: a heavy body, low acidity, and deep chocolate and spice notes. It sits in the same flavor family as other Whirlwind offerings, like the Killer Diller, with a chocolate‑forward, comforting, and robust flavor. This is the only single-origin on our menu that is roasted dark. This coffee is almost as rich as its history. Perfect for someone who enjoys that bold, classic Sumatran flavor.
